a. Introduction
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an auto immune disease whereby specific antibodies wrongfully destroy beta cells in pancreas and creates a deficit of the hormone insulin, which leads to other complications such as hyperglycemia. Although the exact cause for T1D is still unknown, with recent advancement, researchers have identified some key factors contributing in the destruction of pancreatic beta cells, with the help of proteomics. Proteomics is referred to the wide-scale study of proteome, associated with the pancreatic beta cell regulation and related activities in human body. The following research has been conducted to understand the recent advancement in understanding type 1 diabetes with the help of proteomics.
b. Aim of research
The aim of the current research is to explore the recent advancement in research, related to type 1 diabetes. The research is mainly emphasizing upon the study of proteome, through proteomics. The study aims to gain an in-depth understanding about the proteomics related research done on type 1 diabetes.
c. Methods
The focus that has been kept in the current research is the proteomics. In the authentic online databases, five articles have been searched and included in the review, to meet the aim of the research. Thus, the key methods used in these studies, have been reviewed here. The study by Zhang et al., (2012) included “global liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)–based proteomics analyses”, in order to identify the differences among the serum proteins of healthy controls and type 1 diabetes patients. Further, in the review study by Crèvecoeur et al., (2017), the techniques for proteomics analysis, including “2DDIGE and MALDI imaging”, along with novice approaches related to preparing sample, including “laser capture microdissection and immunopeptidomics” have been utilized, for studying the beta-cell proteome in type 1 diabetes. On the other hand, the study by Zhi et al., (2011) utilized “a semiquantitative spectral counting-based two dimensional liquid chromatography mass spectrometry platform” for analyzing serum proteome of type 1 diabetes patients. The study by Sundstrom et al., (2018) utilized the “SDS-PAGE gel” analysis of “retinal lysates, followed by sequential analysis through “liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS), using an Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer”. Finally, Liu et al., (2017) utilized “TMT10-based isobaric labeling and multidimensional LC-MS/MS”, in order to profile the difference among “pancreatic head region tissues” from controls and type 1 diabetic patient, in a quantitative way.
