Compared to first and third-generation computing equipment, mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and other wearable technology are more compact, lightweight, and portable but also process information more quickly and have more storage space. Consequently, these mobile devices are more popular and ubiquitous with various essential day-to-day applications, making them the most popular platforms of choice. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) refers to a collection of design practices geared toward building applicable configurations that boost functionality and fulfill the end user's needs. The aforementioned design practices draw from a wide variety of research fields, such as neuroscience, psychology, symbolic systems, and computer science (Lupanda & Reinsburg, 2021). HCI is crucial given that the user interface (UI) represents the front-end view of an application or website with which the user interacts with underlying software or capability. The efficiency of technology can, therefore, only be assessed in conjunction with the accessibility and usability of the former. This user interface report is based on Spotify, a proprietary audio streaming service available across the service's official website and mobile. In particular, the report will focus on Spotify's mobile application available on Android and Apple devices. While HCI encompasses a wide range of user interfaces, the application is implemented on a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Furthermore, because the application is deployed on a mobile device as opposed to a traditional computer, HCI conventions are tailored to use a tactile touch screen for primary input and output devices. The subset of HCI principles considered for mobile devices is called mobile app design principles. User Description Although Spotify's audience is a majority of Gen-Z and Millennial listeners, the application was built for general use. The end user for the application is not required to be a trained professional or with a particular expert niche knowledge to run it. With a catalog of over 80 million tracks and more than 10 million podcast selections, Spotify caters to diverse music tastes across the globe. Additionally, the application offers a language selection for operation spanning 26 languages. Principles of User Interface Observed a) Aesthetic Design To improve the end user's experience, aesthetic design refers to all consciously and purposefully applied characteristics of beauty, such as harmony, order, and symmetry, in application development. The application's aesthetics and design stimulate the application's first cognitive impression on the user, making it the first frontier of Human-Computer Interaction for a Graphical User Interface (Zhang & Tian, 2018). The user's first encounter with the Spotify application is the logo, which is simple, intuitive, and discernible from other mobile application logos. This iconic minimalist logo consists of a green circle with three black waves superimposed on a black background. The three lines mimic radio frequencies or soundwaves, an apt selection consistent with the application's chief business. Green is supposed to generate sentiments of renewal, security, and a sense of rest in psychology, but according to color theory, it can also represent nature, growth, and abundance. Additionally, in the app, Spotify consistently uses a color scheme of green, black, and white (for text). The listening experience is deep and private, thanks to the default dark mode. Additionally, it creates a background with contrast on which white text, album cover, and control buttons are superimposed. Furthermore, the application is suitably optimized to mimic the portrait orientation of most mobile devices at default use. b) Organization of Context Spotify's mobile app is built around its primary function as an audio streaming device. Upon login, the landing page is the user's personalized content consisting of a collection of all liked tracks, personal playlists, and podcasts on the top of the screen, followed by auto-generated recommended content based on the listener’s preferences and previous selection. This logical arrangement makes navigation self-evident, is user-friendly, and minimizes any need to type or search before accessing the application’s functionality. However, the latter is available as an alternate resort (Lupanda & Reinsburg, 2021). Furthermore, the user's most recent choice makes the first appearance on the screen, making it easy to tap into their last listening session. This design choice also extends to the specific last track or podcast, which is laid on a media panel at the bottom of every page and remains frozen while scrolling. This consistency makes it easy to return to the particular selection playing at any moment continually. When the user clicks on the track at the bottom, a new frame with that track's album art and controls appears from the bottom of the screen. This page contains limited text constituting information about the selection from which the track is playing, thereby making it easier to navigate back to the album or selection from which the track is contained. The album cover art is arranged in a square enclosure in the center of the page, which adds to the page's overall symmetry and clutter-free appearance. Control buttons for next, back, play/pause, and shuffle/repeat commands are placed directly under the album art in a rectangular and even manner. This placement promotes ease of access, given that these are the most commonly used actions by the end user (Babich, 2016). The application also uses radio buttons for shift and repeat functions, highlighted in green when active and white when unchecked. Buttons for uncommonly performed tasks like queue and collapse are placed at the top of the page, reducing the chance of an accidental launch.
