Down’s syndrome is a disease which results from irregularity in the arrangement of chromosomes in a baby’s body while still in the womb. It is often tagged a chromosomal disorder which often causes delay in the development of the child both physically and mentally. This disorder is sometimes inherited though not always. The abnormalities of a child with Down syndrome may not be obvious after birth, but on quite obvious feature is reduced muscle tone (Jacoby 1998). According to Jacoby (1998), Down syndrome is caused by an abnormality of the chromosomes. Technically speaking, chromosomes are the cells which carry the hereditary elements that people acquire from their parents. The major symptoms of this disorder include: large tongues, slow rate of growth and development. Children with this disorder also often have characteristic features of being mentally handicapped. In the history of medial cures, Down’s syndrome has not found a cure or any specific treatment. However, there are several ways in which Down’s syndrome can be treated. Physical therapy to improve speech and walking abilities, being exposed to enriching and fulfilling environments as well as corrective surgery to treat problems associated with this disorder can significantly help to treat this disorder. This should be in line with frequent checkups and counseling as well.
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that affects the central nervous system. According to Carlson (2010), it is one of the most common degenerative neurological disorders. For example, a person with this disease might not be able to stop when they start walking. This disease therefore results in the loss of brain cells that help to coordinate and regulate muscle activity. There are innumerable symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The major symptoms of this disease include: slow physical movement over time, impaired balance, hallucination, tremor of the hands and limbs, changes in speech as well as loss of ability to make automatic movements such as eye blinking.
Polio is a highly contagious and infectious disease caused by a virus which can result to paralysis or even death. This disease is a viral infection caused by the polio virus which often affects the legs. The major symptoms of this disease include the following; tremor, muscle discomforts and pains. There is no known cure for polio. However, medical practitioners treat this disease by ensuring each child has received an injection that serves as immunization against polio. However, corrective surgery is also sometimes employed in to help regain stability and full mobility.
