The American Civil War (1861-1865) was propagated by decades tensions between the Northern and the Southern states over slavery, westward expansion, and state’s rights. The North was characterized by industrial and commercial activities while the South practiced agriculture. The issue of slavery emerged to be a tussle between the two groups and led to a political crisis. Abraham Lincoln had just been inaugurated as the President and was faced with a daunting task of unifying the Confederate States (Southern region) and the Northern states.
The development of a central national government was important in the unification of the Confederate states that were seeking to separate from the Union. It was crucial that the federal government unites the different states and assume the power to control key resources. The election of President Lincoln without a single vote from the Southern states was a clear signal that their influence was gone. Bringing unification was required to prevent another secession (Hallwood 21). Also, the government needed to enact legislative reforms that would have put an end to slavery in the southern states. Achieving equality of all the American citizens was required to ensure that no race appears superior. Easing the tension was also another factor that needed immediate intervention by the government to prevent militia groups from expanding their influence.
The federal government would not have assumed power easily if the conflicts had not erupted. The government, as a result, organized militia units into a huge national army and formed close connections with military suppliers and manufacturers. Additionally, the government was also able to bring legislative changes that integrated the nation into one economy (Hallwood 11). Through military groups, the government was able to defeat the French intervention in Mexico, as well as hastening Canada’s confederation in 1867.
