Mechanical ventilation has been used in patients to reverse or prevent fatigue in respiratory muscles. Even though this intervention has found significant application in patients, there have been increasing concerns that MV causes ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), a fatal problem that increases chances of mortality in population of patients who are already critically ill (Atashi et al., 2018). Existing evidence indicate that incidents of VAP can be prevented through routine oral hygiene, even though this practice has not received significant use in critical care units (Wei & Yang, 2019). This study seeks to determine whether the use of routine oral care hygiene reduces rates of VAP in critically ill patients who are mechanically ventilated. This section of the paper provides a plan for the proposed data analysis. The choice of data analysis for this proposal resonates with the chosen data collection methods. In this paper, the proposed data collection method will be chart review of data from Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) and the Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS), which are preferred for methodological quality. The researcher intends to use both t-tests and chi-square statistical methods of data analysis.
