The studies carried out indicate that racial discrimination, especially in the park system, still looms heavily (Mock, 2016). This raises major concerns since it affects current generations and its likely to be carried forward. Employing more black people in the National Park Service that is dominated by the whites throughout its century could help attract Black Americans to the parks.
Kang Jae, a scholar at the University of Missouri, carried out a study where he tried to uncover the reason why black people don't go to the park (Hurst, 2016). In his study, he discovered that open-floor/door plan or just proximity does not imply that there are equal chances for all people to access, and in this case, it's the same for the African Americans. A good example that could be used to explain this is the Cedar Hill State Park in Texas. The park is located in a place where half the population is made up of black Americans. Despite a large number of the black population, only 11% of the park visitors are made up of black people while 67% of the visitors are made up of white people. These figures are worrying since it's expected that since they are the majority of people around the place, the number of visitors from the black community should be higher.
