Should Teens in the U.S. Adopt the British Custom of Taking a "Gap Year" Between High School and College?
Major parts of U.K and European region, the term gap year is common among the students. A student will take a gap year, that is a year break in the middle of high school and university. The gap year system is usually meant for the student to gain useful life experiences. Common activities performed during this period include and not limited to traveling, humanitarian activities, career internships, religious activities, or learning new languages. The gap year system has gained popularity in the United Kingdom, Australia and recently in the United States; more students seem to be incorporating the idea. Research observes that when a student takes a gap year there is a relationship in performance and the break does not only solidify career choices and academic major, it also leads to satisfaction at future employment (Moore and Slate 57). Today's challenges demand that the school system should develop a student who is not only knowledgeable but also a citizen of the world. The end product of the school journey should be a smart, innovative and critical thinker. These characters help to develop effective citizenship in the future. Proven in U.K and other European region is the gap year system going to work for a U.S student. This paper is going to examine whether the U.S student should take the gap year break before joining college.
