Introduction
In 2011, Amy Chu, a professor of law, wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal that sparked a lot of cultural debates not only in the United States but also across European nations. The article was titled ‘Why Chinese Mothers are Superior’ as a way of advocating for the strict way of parenting known as the tiger parenting that is commonplace in Asian countries. Successive studies that on parenting had also proved that Asian and Western parenting are distinctly different although they both aim at the same goal; the success of a child. In particular, the Stanford research has proven that although the two approaches are different, all of them have sufficient capability of being effective in the long run.
The study noted that unlike the Western children who find motivation from within themselves, their Asian counterparts are pushed by their parents to success. The purpose of this research paper will be to prove the fact that unlike the belief that Tiger parenting produces academically sharp students, it does more harm to them as there cannot stand on their own without the pressure from parents (Chua 23). In addition, the Western parenting may be considered as a too permissive style of parenting but it eventually produces individuals who balance the academics, the society, and their own aspects of living such as self-confidence.
One fundamental aspect of this debate is that the cultural variation of people should not be taken as weakness on the other side. Every society has its own way of motivating its members into success and hence, no ideal culture can apply in all scenarios of children motivation. Children uniquely align themselves with the beliefs and norms of their society such that they strive to achieve what is considering the best in their respective cultural context. For instance, the European American parents prefer giving their children the appropriate advice on how they can take charge of own success paths. On the contrary, the Asian parents are always arm-twisting their children into success. They don’t give children a chance to learn from their own mistakes, which is one of the best approaches to learning. The dependence on parents on matters that require individual intuition is so high in Asian families in comparison to Western ones.
Asian parents encourage interdependence in their children instead of independence. What that implies is that the children cannot make their individual decisions without incorporating the views of those who are close to them such as a mother, father, or siblings. Superficially, this may be seen as a good way of growing up into a responsible and caring individual. However, one naggin...
