Should Parents Be held Responsible for the Crime of Their Children?

It is true that parents hold numerous responsibilities when raising their children, be it biological or adopted children. Parents exist so as to teach their children on how to behave on a daily basis as well as to differentiate right things from wrongs ones (White and Taplin, 2016, p. 45). By teaching them, parents ensure that the children become successful women and men who can be related to the current society rather than juvenile delinquents that would be discriminated by the world (Sage and Ruyter, 2008, p. 789). Since at some point, these children would have to face on their own the real world and at the same time make critical decisions on their own, it is therefore the responsibility of the parents to instill values into the children.
Therefore, I believe that it would be unwise to blame parents and punish them for the actions of their children since pointing fingers on them would not help children learn from the mistake they make. Advocates who are subscribed to a full accountability of parents believe that parents should be held responsible for their children’s mistakes and bear the repercussions since they should always control the actions of their children (Brank and Weisz, 2014, p. 468). Therefore, advocates believe that the parents should be punished whenever their children commit a crime. However, the parents should not be incarcerated for the offenses or rather wrong doings of their children. The children should be held responsible for the wrongdoings since it was their decisions. For this reason, they should always pay the price for the decisions as well as actions they take.
