Introduction
The early mobilization (EM) is a significant aspect of care in the Intensive Care Unit. Essentially, it encompasses strategies that employ evidence-based interventions which are aimed at preventing or reducing the impact of life-threatening trauma, critical illness and injury regarding the possibility to experience severe weaknesses and immobility due to polyneuromyopathy. EM take the effort of not only the medical and nursing staff but also the support of other professionals that together deliver the anticipated care and results. EM intervention are designed to achieve a long-term impact on the patients that survivor the critical illness. For this reason, there have been hypothesized interventions in the ICU care that can directly influence success in both long-term and short-term prevention of mortality, and persistent physical and neuropsychological damages due to the illness (Adler & Malone, 2012). Most of these interventions rely on the staffing of the ICU, the monitoring strategies and the operational techniques employed by the ICU team leaders.
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical issues or problems related to early mobilization in the ICU care of a patient. It also seeks to find the nursing interventions made amidst these challenges to ensure the patients receive quality care that realizes the core objectives of EM. Besides these, it illustrates the complementary role that other professionals play in the functional context of the ICU and how they are incorporated.
Clinical Issues Regarding the ICU Patient
The patient that find their way to the ICU present challenging unspoken demands that the ICU team must address for an objective EM. First, more often than not, the patients are immobilized due to the critical illness. This demands for the collaboration of the staff to ensure the patient escapes physiological impairments like muscle atrophy and weaknesses, loss of bone mass, blood clotting and poor functional denervation. Second, most of the patients in the ICU have circulatory and respiratory problems. These challenges are direct results of severe weaknesses and muscle atrophy. Further, the immobility reduces the cardiac action potential and makes it difficult to supply enough blood to all other body parts.
