Introduction
Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are nosocomial acquired and are not present during the time of patient admission. According to Khan, Hamzah, Adnan, Khan and Mallhi (2014), infections may include urinary tract infections due to issues with the catheter, surgical site infections, pneumonia, and meningitis, among others. This paper seeks to shed light on catheter-related contaminations as a hospital-acquired infection and formulate anEvidence-Based Practice (EBP) plan to improve quality care.
HAIs as a Result of Catheters
Catheter-related infections are among the leading types of HAIs, especially in dialysis units. There are two types of dialysis including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. During Hemodialysis (HD), a catheter passes through the patient’s veins to the dialysis machine. According to Karkar (2018), patients undergoinghemodialysis are more prone to infections due to the prolonged stay in the dialysis units. Venous catheters carry major risks of infections leading to high morbidity and mortality rates. While citing data from the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), researchers like Steinkuller, Harris, Vigil and Ostrosky-Zeichner (2018), observe that catheter-related infectionsstood at 32% in the year 2002. In a more recent study byThompson (2018), states that catheter-related bloodstream infections have reduced by 50% between 2008 and 2014 even though the rates are different in different states, hence there is still room for improvement.
