Introduction
The office of the American President is one of the highest and most powerful offices in the world. The United States, US, is one of the most powerful nations in the globe and holding the office of the presidency, makes one the most powerful leader in the world. There are several reasons why the US is regarded as the most powerful nation, including having the largest economy in the world and having the dominant military power around the world. Therefore, the President of the US is the most powerful and is often referred to as the leader of the free world because of the country’s democracy.
However, the constitutional powers conferred to the American President are contained in Article II of the constitution. Under the constitution, the office of the President is an independent and unitary office which is granted executive powers. Over the recent past, it is observed that the presidents are giving themselves certain unconstitutional powers which are often referred to as informal powers. However, in light of the current political climate today, there is the need to understand the powers granted to the President under Article II of the constitution. Also, it is essential to understand the limitations present in the constitution that limits the use of presidential power.
The American presidency, being the most powerful offices, is bestowed with being the executive authority, Commander in Chief, power to approve bills passed by Congress, and having the pardon power under the Constitution. Furthermore, the President has other political roles, including conducting foreign affairs policy and influencing Congress in passing specific bills aimed at the accomplishment of the President’s legislative agenda. Despite the executive power granted to the President, there are also certain limitations surrounding the use of presidential power, which are the separation of power, the judicial system, and the presence of Congress. The United States Congress is the legislative arm of government whose functions include lawmaking, collecting revenue, and acts as an essential constraint on the Chief Executive.
