Section A
1. Discuss the extent to which the "Tranquility" simulates conflict. Explain your answers.
There is interpersonal or intergroup conflict in the Tranquility. Various parties have different opinions about the expansion of the airport to the west. Some support the airport's expansion due to economic opportunities such as more scheduled flights to Tranquility. In contrast, others oppose the development because of its dangers, especially to the group of people living near the airport. The parties in the conflict are involved in a communication process that aims to produce a shared meaning and find a solution to the common problem while preserving the relationship to achieve shared objectives. In the case of Tranquility, various people are allowed to give their perceptions of the struggle involved, that is, the expansion of the airport. The different interests of the groups in the case study give rise to a conflict situation. For instance, the student wants the development to happen to make it easy to travel home. The clergy are against the expansion because it will displace the communities living in the west and those not well represented in the task force. When two or more party groups have different interests or perceptions towards a common issue, it leads to an intergroup or interpersonal conflict (Wilmot and Hocker., p.3).
