A Critical Analysis of the Effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (Thesis Proposal Sample)

Instructions:

This meta-analysis included five studies on the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in treating dementia and other interventions that have notable effects in treating dementia. The studies were conducted at different times; hence, the possibility of conclusive evidence bias with respect to time. This analysis aimed at determining the heterogeneity of these individual studies in determining the influence of CBT in treating dementia.

A Critical Analysis of the Effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy in Dementia Treatment Compared to other Treatment Models (Psychosocial Interventions)
Results
Studies Included
This meta-analysis included five studies on the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in treating dementia and other interventions that have notable effects in treating dementia. The studies were conducted at different times; hence, the possibility of conclusive evidence bias with respect to time. This analysis aimed at determining the heterogeneity of these individual studies in determining the influence of CBT in treating dementia.

MEMO+: Efficacy, Durability, and Effect of Cognitive Training and Psychosocial Intervention in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 66(4), 655–663. https://doi.org/10.1111/jgs.15192
Bellevile et al. (2018) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of cognitive memory training in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The objective was to determine the durability of the effects of the training and if similar effects could be obtained using a different dementia treatment methodology, psychosocial intervention. The study was conducted in Quebec with a sample size of 145 adults with MCI, where 43 were a control group. Of the 145 participants, 40 were subjected to cognitive training for 2 hours. In addition, another 43 were subjected to psychosocial interventions, with 43 in the control group. The control group was not subjected to any form of dementia treatment. The study found an immense improvement for patients subjected to cognitive training. The effect of the treatment was evident in the everyday life of the patient. On the contrary, patients subjected to psychosocial and no-contact intervention showed no improvement.

Burgener et al. (2008) also conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of the multimodal intervention on cognitive functioning and behavioral outcomes in dementia patients. The study found a positive influence of multimodal intervention in dementia patients in the disorder's early stagesrder.

Spector et al. (2015) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy in treating dementia. The researcher found a positive impact of CBT in treating dementia compared to those not subjected to any treatment.

Lai et al. (2020) evaluated behavioral activation scheduling versus dementia care over ten weeks. The study found activity scheduling could influence the participant’s urge to participate. According to Lai et al. (2020), the participants wanted to participate in more activities than the researchers expected.

Orgeta et al. (2019) also conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of behavioral activation (BA) therapies on dementia treatment compared to the treatment as usual (TAU) interventions. The study found a significant difference in the urge to participate in activities for patients subjected to BA therapies compared to those who were not.
Heterogeneity Test
Figure 1 shows the heterogeneity test.
The heterogeneity test has a P-value higher than 0.05 (p = .250), implying heterogeneity is insignificant among the studies included. This implies the studies included are homogenous and can be summarized in a result to study the impact of dementia intervention techniques on cognitive training.
