Income inequality refers to the uneven allocation of income among individuals (Darity Jr. et al., 2020). Economies characterized by high levels of inequality at the outset, or those that exhibit a more equitable distribution of wealth between the affluent and the impoverished during their development, demonstrate reduced efficacy in poverty reduction.
Enhancing employment policies such as mutual bargaining privileges, full employment plans, living wage policies, improved minimum wage regulations, and wage subsidies could be considered. Direct income transfer systems encompass various types of transfers, including legacy, earnings-related, and temporary transfers. The concept of collective payments, including the detrimental income tax and a universal basic income not dependent on resources, is increasingly gaining momentum. The implementation of financial policies such as the Tobin Financial Transaction Tax or the Universal Resource Consumption Tax has the potential to generate funds that can be utilized for direct income transfers and other forms of assistance aimed at reducing poverty and inequality on a global scale (Baloch et al., 2020). The policies in question will be significantly influenced by ethical and national security factors.
Implementing Change
Following the typology of social movements outlined in Chapter 18, I, as a leader of a social movement organization that aims to tackle the issue of income inequality, would conceptualize the movement as a reformative social movement. The social movement endeavors to effectuate modifications within the current system by contesting societal disparities and promoting policy alterations grounded on legislative and institutional restructurings. This particular form of activism is most appropriate for addressing the matter above, as it aims to leverage established power structures to effectuate transformation.
Its strategy involves conducting campaigns and organizing events that highlight personal narratives and firsthand encounters of individuals impacted by the issue of income inequality. The movement aims to identify and collaborate with influential policymakers to achieve its objectives. It intends to work with affiliated entities from the public and private sectors to effectuate policy modifications.
Resources and Obstacles
The social movement organization would require many resources to attain its objectives, encompassing both material and immaterial assets. The movement's operational success would depend on tangible and intangible resources (Galletta & Giommoni, 2022). While funding, facilities, and transportation are crucial for its functioning, volunteer labor, grassroots support, and media coverage are equally important for generating awareness and mobilizing action.
