Healthcare organizations are formed to provide exceptional healthcare services to their clients. They thus need an effective governance structure that would foster the realization of their social and corporate goals. The shareholders expect positive returns for their investments, hence the need to have a governance structure to balance healthcare facilities' corporate and social goals. World Health Organization (WHO) (n.d) defines governance as the process of making rules and policies that direct the decisions made in a healthcare facility. Governance is essential since it ensures that the managers maintain the hospital's strategic direction, suppress the undesirable trends, and regulate behavior with the advisory, cooperative, management team, and policy models being the common governance models used in healthcare systems.
Importance of Governance Structures in Healthcare
Governance structures in healthcare are essential. First, it helps the managers and directors to maintain a strategic direction. Like in other sectors, the health sector is evolving with new entrants bringing other innovations likely to improve the services offered. After developing competitive strategies, hospitals are likely to address their patients' concerns while also meeting their corporate goals (WHO, n.d). The governance structures are essential in providing the direction that healthcare facilities should comply with to realize their objectives.
Additionally, governance in healthcare organizations helps the leaders to detect and correct undesirable trends. Several factors are likely to adversely influence hospitals' operations, hence the need for the leaders to suppress their actions. For instance, Erlingsdottir et al. (2018) opine that ineffective staffing processes, lack of employee motivation, and unfair workplace practices are likely to compromise healthcare facilities' quality of services. Therefore, governance structures help defines the right ways the staffing processes should be implemented and the employee motivations to be adopted to ensure that the processes are productive.
Moreover, governance structures are essential since they regulate the behavior of individuals within healthcare organizations. A code of ethics guides all staff members in organizations, with clear sanctions for non-compliance (Baker, 2015). Immoral behaviors could distort a company's reputation, making it lose clients to other healthcare facilities. The leaders, through the designed governance structure, set rules that govern the behaviors of the individuals. They decide on the sanctions against those violating the code of ethics and empower the staff on the importance of moral actions. Thus, governance structures help in ensuring that people behave as expected in care settings.
