Synthesis of Current Research
The last 20 years has seen considerable developments in end of life and palliative care research. Such advances have not only enhanced human understanding of the burden of ailments such as cancer on patients and their loved ones, but also shown that palliative care treatment models can enhance patient outcomes while also reducing healthcare-related costs (Matzo, & Sherman, 2014). With respect to the current practices for end of life and palliative care from the Western Medicine, palliative care is increasingly being integrated into standard-of-care treatment regimens. In countries like Australia, for instance, palliative and end of life care is delivered in numerous healthcare settings which include pediatric, neonatal, community aged care services, public as well as private acute healthcare facilitiesas noted by Atlas, Matthews, Fritsvold, and Vinall (2014). Similarly, support services are granted to patients from the comfort of their homes in the form of end-of-life care. Palliative services is also operate from a multitude of settings which include specialist admitted patient consultancy amenities, hospices, specialist admitted patient settings as well as community-based specialist services.
