It can be described as a learning disability that affects a small portion of American society. This research piece delves into the causes, diagnosis, effects, and intervention applicable to the problem. Introduction Dyslexia can be described as a condition characterized by a learning disability that depletes reading and comprehension skills. Patients who suffer from this condition often show signs of difficulty in reading writing and spelling. Understanding the underlying causes, effect of the condition on lifestyle, diagnosis procedures, and effective interventions are necessary to provide patients with the necessary support they deserve. What are the Causes and Factors that Increase Dyslexia Risks? Dyslexia has been strongly linked to genetic components (Smith 2012). Various research conducted show that multiple genes contribute to an individual’s susceptibility to the condition. These genes are known to contribute to the disruption in neural pathways involved in reading and processing language. Neuro-imaging studies have revealed that brain structure and function may also contribute to Dyslexia disorder risks. Neuro-imaging procedures have revealed that Dyslexia patients do develop disruptions in their brain area associated with reading and language (Johnson et al. 2018). Aside from genetic and structural deformities, Phonological deficiencies have also been linked with the development of Dyslexia. Phonological processing deficiencies often hinder a patient’s ability to recognize and manipulate sounds (Snow et al. 2016). Dyslexia Diagnosis A comprehensive assessment of the condition is often the most important diagnosis step taken to detect Dyslexia. This assessment often involves having the patient undergo some standardized reading and language tests. During the tests, the physician observes the patient’s reading performance and compares this with their family health record. This assessment aims to identify only reading difficulties as a symptom of Dyslexia while ruling out other causes. The multi-disciplinary approach may be conducted when there is a need for a broader examination of a patient. In this case, educational psychologists, and speech-language pathologists may be invited to further diagnose the patient (Davies & White 2020). Multi-disciplinary diagnosis is the most comprehensive form of diagnosing Dyslexia. Diagnosing and intervening against Dyslexia in early childhood can significantly improve a patient’s reading and writing skills. (Shaywitz et al. 2018). Dyslexia Intervention Assisted technology is one of the most efficient interventions for Dyslexia conditions (Alves et al. 2017). This technology may include text-to-speech software and audiobooks that help patients access written materials easily. Structured literacy programs may also be administered to patients. These are evidence-based interventions that can provide systematic instructions to patients, especially in phonics and some decoding skills (Torgesen et al. 2018) Structured literacy programs help improve reading and spelling in Dyslexia patients. Individualized Education Plans also known as IEPs are Dyslexia condition intervention treatments developed to address patients’ specific needs. They are customized instructions for enhanced academic success among Dyslexia patients (Fletcher et al. 2017).
