Over the last decade, the rise of movements for evidence-based practices and policies has been inevitable in the field of education. As much as this is concerned, there are two federal legislation in place, the ‘No Child Left Behind At’ (NCLB) and ‘individual with disabilities education act’ (IDEA) (Cook & Cook, 2013). The two policies have helped in identifying the practices which are evidence-based or research-based for students with special needs. Evidence-based practices (EPB), originated in the field of medicine after working for many patients. They are concepts which based on the clinical physicians, an individual can make judgment established on previous systemic research (Cook & Cook, 2013).
In education, there are different concepts which may define evidence-based practices. First, it may encompass the entire curricula thus termed as macro-EBP or could include specific practices within a program thus known as micro-EBP. Depending on different skills, the review of EBP indicates the various concepts, for instance, instructional techniques which include letter sounding. In public education, teachers are needed to not only rely on their ideas and skills but use strategies instituted by the law through the above-listed policies. Thus, evidence-based practice is a requirement by the law (Melnyk et al., 2012). By definition, they are teaching strategies which have been tested and tried through a series of experiments with a large number of subjects (Melnyk et al., 2012). Special children are just like any other student and need to receive much attention for them to gain to their maximum potential. While the policies listed above stand, there is a need for proper research on how specific strategies are incorporated in the classroom. It is very challenging to teachers, educating students with special needs as most of them to require particular need and attention depending on their disabilities (Cook & Cook, 2013). To ensure success, teachers can implement some of these strategies which can guarantee their student's success.
