History and Theory
Comprehensively, Curanderismo is a merged all-encompassing practice of traditional and folk medicine related with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing. The Spanish word curar refers to heal (Favazza Titus, 2013). Curanderismo’s origin in the Americas can be dated back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when Spain identified and vanquished the indigenous people of the New World (Valdez, 2014). After freedom from Spain, newly framed nations of the Americas proceeded with a considerable level of the Spanish customs, including traditional medicine. Mexican Curanderismo is the antecedent to the Curanderismo that is prevalent in the United States (U.S.) by Mexican immigrants and the individuals who became American residents after the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Valdez, 2014). Later Mexican immigration maintained Curanderismo practices.
Curanderos heal with varied resources from the earth, for example, plants, tree bark, herbs, oils, and other animal parts (Sanchez, 2018). Healing also includes materials that are thought to have huge significance, for example, special necklaces, incense, and fragrances (Sanchez, 2018).
