Health Hazards of Smoking
The hazardous effects of cigarette smoking continue to cause discussions among various health organizations across the globe. In spite of the extensive efforts to stop smoking in the United States in particular, the cigarette industry continues to grow unabatedly in other regions and parts of the globe. This should be very alarming, considering the numerous hazards associated with cigarette smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2019), each year, about four hundred and eighty thousand deaths can be attributed to cigarette smoking. Although smoking is a personal choice and can be quite pleasurable, it has been proven to cause chronic diseases, damage to vital body organs, changes in the human reproductive system, and leads to addiction.
As indicated in most cigarette packets, cigarette smoking is harmful to an individual’s health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2019), cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, with about eighty to ninety percent of lung cancer cases being associated with cigarette smoking. Furthermore, according to Singh, R. C et al. (2015), smoking also leads to peripheral vesicular diseases, peptic ulcers, and tuberculosis. Therefore, smoking is bad for human health because it leads to the development of chronic illnesses, heart failure, lung failure, tuberculosis, and ulcers, which can lead to the loss of human life.
