Trenton Psychiatric Hospital Latoya Coleman Purdue University Global Date Trenton Psychiatric Hospital The study seeks to showcase a fundamental understanding of the nursing practice principles including the administration of the health facility, healthcare management, policy, economics, and law. The administration of the hospital plays a crucial role in the quality of services it provides to the patients. It ensures that the staffs comply with the laws and policy of the health care providers in their practice. Factors such as the privacy of the patients are crucial in the nursing practice and need utmost consideration during the treatment period. The hospital management should further look into issues concerning economics to avoid losses that can impact into the closure of the facility when it fails to meet its financial requirements. Poor administration of a hospital can even contribute to the high turnover of the medical team as they feel uncomfortable working in environments that do not adhere to the regulations of the healthcare practice. Also due to the dynamics in the healthcare industry, the standard and quality have faced complexity that calls for changes in both ethical and professional dimensions to match the emerging issues in the healthcare administrative practices to conform to ethics, professionalism and the set legal standards in the healthcare service delivery. Thus, this paper involves a case study in the TPH to show how it has fared in the industry regarding policy, law, economics, management and administration, and the analysis of the financial management, quality standards, and service reimbursement, methods of funding quality and ethics, accreditation, awards, regulations, ethical issues regarding care to the patients and healthcare marketing at TPH according to the professional, ethical, and legal standards of healthcare administrative practices. Rationale Behind the TPH Selection The study selected Trenton Psychiatric Hospital due to its history regarding health policy and administration. Dorothea Lynde Dix founded the facility in 1848 to care for the mental illness patients in Trenton City and across the state of New Jersey (Bigelow, 2013; O’Reilly & Lester, 2017). TPH was among the first institutions to implement the Kirk bride plan that aimed at improving the patient privacy as well as making the asylum conducive for the mental illness patients through increasing access to the fresh air and sunlight. The initial successful administration of the facility helped it to expand only during its early stages in the 19th century. The problem began in the hospital when Dr. Henry Cotton became the medical director. Dr. Cotton believed that infections were the causes of the mental issues and mutilated the infected body parts of the patients against their will (Perceval, 2017). His actions were a breach of the law that requires patients to undergo surgeries only upon their consent. The high mortality rates in the hospital led to the withdrawal of many patients, and several sections of the facility have remained abandoned. Analysis of the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital Description of the TPH structure Physical Setting. The location of the TPH is in the Ewing and Trenton in the state of New Jersey. The organization started as the New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum. It is one of the few state-run hospitals in New Jersey and deals in mental health. The facility became famous due to its adoption of the Kirk bride plan that included a central administration section and two wings that housed patients. The strategy enabled the facility to accommodate patients in several classes. It also provided adequate privacy, fresh air, and even sunlight to the patients to contribute to their treatment needs. The facility has however adopted the modern settings for mental health hospitals. Due to its dark history, the hospital has several blocks still abandoned to date. Patient/client base. TPH receives clients from across the state of New Jersey. It is one of the oldest mental hospitals in the state, and its previous success saw it admit several patients. Trenton Psychiatric hospital was one of the psychological illness facilities preferred by customers across New Jersey. The reign of Dr. Cotton, however, had a negative contribution to the hospital (Perceval, 2017). Several patients withdrew from the facility due to the high mortality rates witnessed at the time. It has nonetheless remained one of the best mental health care facilities in the region. Level of clinical activity and research in TPH. Trenton Psychiatric Hospital started on a high where its clinical activities targeted improvement in the level of health care services provided to the patients. The institution increased its bed capacity to meet the requirements of mental illness patients. The implementation of the Kirk bride plan was one of the activities that highlighted the management's commitment to the improvement of the patient welfare. The administration of TPH has however received extensive criticism due to its practices during the leadership of Dr. Cotton and even after his reign (Perceval, 2017). Dr. Cotton believed that infections were the causes of mental illnesses and he mutilated the infected organs and uprooted the teeth of patients. There was also no consent from the patients for the surgeries which are against the law. Such activities led to high rates of death in the facility as the patients succumbed to the operations and lack of treatment for their illnesses. Mental problems always occur from genetic factors, depression, diseases and environmental factors (Gervasio & McAloon, 2013). Associating the condition to just infections was a show of insufficient research. Hence, the hospital failed to invest in research during Dr. Cotton reign leading to its downfall (Perceval, 2017). Mission, Vision, and Goals of the TPH Mission. The mission of the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital is to provide a holistic approach to the patient care that starts during the assessment and ends at the recovery stage through treatment of the responses. The facility believes in delivering quality health care to the patients suffering from problems associated with mental health which is a significant issue in human health. The hospital ensures that both the patient and his or her family receive competent and compassionate care that will help in the collective realization of the patient care goals. Vision. The vision of the hospital is to become one of the best mental health hospitals in both New Jersey and the entire US meeting individualized patient objectives. Mental illnesses have various causes that only needs the use of extensive research to establish the causal effects and provide the relevant medication strategies for faster recovery of patients. Besides, it requires a conducive environment to accelerate the patient recovery process. TPH has committed itself to meet such goals through implementation of the modern technics in managing the mentally ill patients. Goal. The primary aim of the facility is to meet the health needs of individual patients visiting the facility. It understands the diverse requirements of the mental illness patients resulting from the variety of causes which demand in-depth analysis before execution of the treatment. The previous downfall of the facility was an indicator of poor care strategies as Dr. Cotton had generalized the causes of mental illnesses. Community and Global Impact of TPH Mental health has become a significant challenge to the Trenton Community and the whole world. The increasing number of substance abusers has immensely contributed to the rising number of mentally ill patients (Gervasio & McAloon, 2013). Successful treatment of these problems through proper management of facilities such as TPH will be vital in the elimination of the mental health menace. Professionalism and Ethical Analysis of the TPH Professional, ethical, and legal standards of healthcare administrative practices Professionalism and ethics are imperative aspects of healthcare service delivery to the patients, employees, and employers in an administrative context. However, they have to conform to the legal standards to maintain the image of a healthcare facility. The primary importance of the administrative ethics is the protection of both the employers and employees against the unethical practices while designing organization culture, exercising profit maximization through cutting costs, employee treatment, and the treatment of patients as reflected by Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. Organizational Culture The core of ethics in healthcare administration is organization culture; thus a culture of impunity in leads to cronyism whereby the management is involved prioritization and safeguarding of self-interest (Ramdhani and Ainissyifa, 2017). The adverse effects of practicing cronyism in healthcare administration are reflected in service delivery through hiring doctors and other health care practitioners based on interest other than merits and qualifications for the job. For this reason, Trenton Psychiatric Hospital has a system of hiring process where vacancies are advertised to the public through its website and other media in a transparent order, and all the relevant bodies are involved in interviewing the shortlisted candidates (Ramdhani and Ainissyifa, 2017). The result is hiring of the highly qualified team that uphold ethics and professionalism; and are not bound by any promises to pay back favors to the hiring board but are hardworking and efficient in offering quality services to the patients and enhancing the image of the hospital (Ramdhani and Ainissyifa, 2017). Another advantage of having unbiased hiring is the minimization of medical errors that might lead to loss of lives; in the process of discharging care to the patients. In the field of healthcare, there is the issue of cutting costs especially in the pr...
