Nurses play an important role of advocating for healthcare reforms, by demanding for patient-centered, quality, safe, affordable and accessible care. The essay discusses the role of nurses in healthcare settings. While nurses make important contributions concerning disease prevention and wellness, they also educate patients about social or environmental factors that trigger preventable diseases. According to Salmond and Echevarria (2017), nurses educate patients how to enhance wellness. An inclusive and holistic patient-centeredness approach promotes quality care (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). However, at the core of nursing practice is the need for effective communication and tools to impact quality care. Nevertheless, poor workflows often hamper effective communication, which leads to workarounds. Owing to poor services the safety of patients is endangered, hence negative patient outcomes. The Barcode Medical Administration (BCMA) technology has, for instance, led to workflow workarounds. Essentially, nurses tend to bypass the technology to be effective. In the long-run it strains the process of care. Although the BCMA system should increase efficiency it frustrates the entire process because nurses cannot perform simple tasks such as ordering drugs. Any technology that fails to support the objectives of care teams promotes workarounds through impaired coordination between primary care physicians and nurses.
