On the Achievement of Happiness
It is no scheme or gimmick that people, since the dawn of humanity, had desired a single feeling more than any other, and that is being happy. Anything a person wants leads to the same result, they want it because it makes them happy, they want to marry a certain person and have a family because it makes them happy. People have always strived to be happy in every way, shape, and form. (Diener, 2000). The effect spans over all things big and small, from someone’s desired spouse and career, to their favorite mug and lucky socks.
People have been trying their own attempts at feelings more happy and content with their quality of life. But while many can feel the unmistakable surge of happiness, the feeling is only temporary, and constant happiness feels almost unattainable. Average people are the ones who have collected the pieces of the puzzle over a long period of time, but modern psychologists are the ones to put them together and give us the full picture on how to truly be happy. One way to put it is with the infamous phrase “fake it till you make it” or what psychologists refer to as Positive Psychological Interventions (PPI), for according to Lyubomirsky and Sin (2009) PPIs’ main goal is increasing positive feelings and behaviors in order to achieve happiness, by focusing on enhancing the positive, instead of mending and erasing the negative.
