Abdellah Faye Glenn has transformed nursing from being disease-focused to patient-centered. She believed that caregiving should aim to mold technical competencies, intellectual skills, and attitudes of individual nurses into the willingness and ability to assist people in managing their health needs. Thus, Abdellah’s approach to nursing is more individualized and patient-centered. Mehraeen & Nazarpour (2020) note that her framework initially focused on hospitalized patients, but it is relevant to overall healthcare. Caregiving comprises four metaparadigm concepts, including person, health, environment, and nursing responsibilities, requiring a comprehensive definition (Deliktas et al., 2019). Abdellah Faye’s patient-centered theory is significant because it points to a holistic view of care, covering the four concepts which address how nursing should function. Her theory explains nursing as a comprehensive service based on 21 nursing problems, ten steps to identify a patient’s needs, and eleven nursing competencies applicable to developing a treatment typology (Mehraeen & Nazarpour, 2020). This essay aims to discuss how Faye G. Abdellah’s patient-centered theory reflects the four components of the nursing metaparadigm.
Person Concept
This aspect focuses on nursing care receivers with emotional, physical, and social needs. The patient’s family members and other responsible individuals are considered in this concept. As the person component addresses social, health care, and spiritual needs, the wellness outcome is attributed to how the patient interacts with social and physical connections (Deliktas et al., 2019). The primary focus of this concept, according to Abdellah Faye, is to empower individuals to manage their health and wellbeing with self-preservation, tailored with dignity and positive connections. The person component of the nursing metaparadigm manifests itself from the ten steps to identify a client’s needs. Abdellah states that the nursing caregiver should learn to know the patient and continue observing and evaluating him over time to identify any clues and attitudes affecting his behavior (Mehraeen & Nazarpour, 2020). Afterward, the nurse can identify and plan for the appropriate therapeutic course. This step is human-focused because it aims to examine clients by determining their emotional, physical, and sociological needs, necessitating nursing actions.
