Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Evidence-Based Practice
Nurses provide both baseline and advanced care to their patients in hospitals or any other healthcare institution. As frontline healthcare workers, they need to consistently update their skills and knowhow through lifelong learning because they are involved in decision-making levels on patient care and management of acute to chronic illnesses. For this reason, they will advance their education and conduct more research, as they will be required to formulate ideas on Evidence-Based Practise (EBP) in nursing among populations with type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (Chien, 2019). Some of the EBP models in use include the John Hopkins Nursing Evidence Practice Model (JHNEBP) and Lowa, both of which have the common goal of offering a guide to the actualization of evidence-based nursing practice and incorporating evidence in patient management.
Introduction
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report on T2DM indicate a decrease in newly diagnosed cases in the past ten years. A report compiled in 2018 for various ethnic groups and ages shows that one in every ten adults have T2DM (CDC, 2020). However, the prevalence was high among African Americans and Hispanic racial populations, compared to the non-Hispanic white. The disease remains a burden to both economic and public health systems. Hence, there is a need to sensitize people on the prevention, control, and treatment measures. It requires a collaborative approach from individuals, families, healthcare institutions, and the community while upholding patient-centered management regarding evidence-based practice guidelines (Lin, Thompson, Cheng, & Zhuo, 2018). The paper aims to explore the role of Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) practitioners in providing essential and high-quality care for T2DM patients and providing relevant recommendations for the population at risk.
