When conducting staff training in an organization, a number of evaluation criteria can be employed to assess the efficacy of such learning and development to the staff. Some of the commonly used learning evaluation tools include the Kirkpatrick model, the Brinkerhoff model and the Phillip model. For staff training, a combination of two or three of the evaluation criteria is bound to yield better outcomes than relying on one.
The Kirkpatrick model is the most popular method of assessing learning and development (L&D) in any organization. Applied since 1959, it is preferred for its simplicity and pragmatism (Tamkin, Yarnall & Kerrin, 2002). It categorizes assessment in four levels: reaction, learning, behavior and results. In level 1, participants give feedback on what they have learnt; in level 2, performance tests are administered and in level 3, behavior is monitored to identify whether the L&D is applied. In level 4, the business metrics of the organization are measured to see whether there has occurred a return on investment put into the L&D (Tamkin, Yarnall & Kerrin, 2002). This is a great method to be used in any organization as it provides a sizeable amount of information with regards to the efficacy of training offered to staff.
