Diabetes
The chronic diseases have become most prevalent in the world today mostly due to lifestyle. Diabetes is a group of metabolic medical conditions that lender an individual high blood sugar. This could happen when the pancreases is defective and cannot produce adequate insulin or the cell does not respond well to the insulin produced. When there is high blood sugar level, the patient produces symptoms of increased hunger, frequent urination and increased thirst. There are three types of diabetes namely which include: type 1 which is a result of the body being unable to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is as a result of the body cells being unable to use the insulin produced properly. Addition to a type that is common among the pregnant women with previous diagnosis of diabetes develops a high level of blood glucose. Type 1 diabetes is usually inherited from parent’s genes, which may also be as a result of certain disease infections. Type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle factors such as eating habits (Kaku 44).
A study by Schellenberg (543), Type 2 diabetes is a public health issues for both the developed and developing countries as it has increased in alarming rate, which has made it an epidemic. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Type 2 diabetes is preventable and manageable. After a meal or taking food rich in carbohydrates such as starches and sugars, the level of the blood glucose usually increases. In order to regulate the increased sugar level, the pancreases respond by secreting a hormone known as insulin whose job is to ensure that the blood glucose level goes back to normal(Schellenberg 548). A person with type 2 diabetes is therefore not able to control this blood glucose level because of the impaired insulin or inadequate insulin produced by the pancreases.
Apart from the genetic factors, other factors that contribute to the disease include diet, environment, modern lifestyle, physical inactivity, and stress among others. According to Kaku (2010), management of the type 2 diabetes would require controlling the above-mentioned risk factors. Physical exercise is having a planned and repetitive movement of skeletal muscles, which is performed using the body energy. According to Schellenberg (2013), there are benefits for patients with type 2 diabetes as the symptoms improve after exercise. In the modern treatment of the disease, exercise is fully incorporated. Exercising usually regulate the blood glucose level, improves insulin action, improves the flexibility of the muscles , prevents complications of diabetes, improves cardiovascular system and quality of life.it also reduces stress which is one of the risk factors that contribute to type 2 diabetes(Schellenberg 549).
The food choice is another aspect that should be considered when managing or preventing type 2 diabetes. It is important to maintain a healthy nutrition habit. These healthy habits are and should be established during childhood and the adolescent stage. This is because during these two stages, the body is growing and using a lot of energy to build a healthy adult hood. However, it is at these development stages that poor nutritional habit is rampant which has exposed many to risk or getting type 2 diabetes. Poor eating habits are also responsible for diabetes, which is another risk factor that could lead to type 2 diabetes. Obesity is a condition where an individual is weighing above the proper weight with regard to his or her height (Schellenberg 549).
It is widely known that healthy eating habit is the basis for the treatment of the type 2 diabetes. It positively contributes to the regulation of the blood glucose within the required range. Recent studies indicate that having Mediterranean diet would be idea for this kind of patient. This diet comprise of the fruits, herbs fish, legumes, cereals and very small portions of meat and wine (Kaku 44).
