Week 5 Disease Assignment
Type 2 diabetes counts among the most prevalent form of diseases in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 34 million people in the United States, and about 90% to 95% have type 2 diabetes. The disease mostly develops in patients above 45 years, but recently more young people are also acquiring it. Diabetes results from a body’s resistance to insulin or insufficient insulin production by the pancreas. The exact cause of this phenomenon is unclear. However, researchers believe that environmental and genetic factors, including inactivity and overweight, contribute to developing type 2 diabetes. Therefore, a proper understanding of type 2 diabetes is crucial in informing its treatment and management strategies.
Prominent Aspects of this Disease
Type 2 diabetes is among the leading causes of death in the world. The disease is a worldwide public health issue because its patients have approximately quadrupled since the 1980s (“10 Facts on Diabetes”). It causes complications in multiple parts of the body, including amputation, blindness, and kidney failure, increasing premature mortality rate. In 2012, type 2 diabetes led to the death of 1.5 million people globally (“10 Facts on Diabetes”). The number of people with the disease progresses quickly, with approximately 0.4 million in the world having diabetes. Diabetes prevalence is increasingly fast in low and medium-income nations compared to developed ones. Studies indicate that type 2 diabetes is more common than type 1 diabetes. However, the former is preventable through a healthy diet and physical exercise because its causes are known (“10 Facts on Diabetes”). It is challenging to manage type 1 diabetes because its contributing factors are unknown. Patients with type 2 diabetes can live long, productive lives provided the disease is detected and managed in time.
