Executive summary
This case study explores the IT system failure in CareGroup, paralyzing operations for more than a day. CareGroup is a team of healthcare professionals who came together to ensure that the people of Massachusetts get quality healthcare services at an affordable cost. The initial idea to form the organization came from three healthcare facilities, but the membership later expanded to five and has over 13000 employees and more than 2000 physicians. The IT system failure occurred a day after an engineer who was experimenting on a managerial application in the system took a three-week paternal leave. Most of the operations in the organization were affected because the organization was not prepared to handle system failures. It was not until Cisco, and his SWAT team intervened to solve the problem (McFarlan & Austin, 2003).
Any organization should always strengthen its IT system because it is the backbone of most operations. CareGroup made such efforts but were not effective enough for the failure not to affect operations. It is recommended to have an independent body of experts who continuously monitor the system to intervene on impeding system dangers besides carrying out system updates and maintenance. It is also safe to have a cloud backup account where data is stored and retrieved from other computers whenever there is a system failure. An organization should also have dynamic employees who can handle situations manually in case digitized services are unavailable.
