Introduction
The purpose of this report is to explore the impact of leadership and management and power and politics on the culture of an organization by taking a case study of the Bain and Company in the UK. Leadership influence organizational behavior and culture of employees in many ways. This could be the way they implement their leadership skills through the use of power vested upon them or through establishing a clear organizational focus towards the realization of the company’s vision and communication in such a manner that the conflicts that arise among the employees can be managed in a more satisfying and rational manner. This paper focuses on analyzing how organizational leadership and management integrate concepts of power in managing organizational conflicts and how politics that arise out of such management affects the culture of the organization in terms of behavior of the employees, the work structure as well as the organizational productivity and aggregate performance index. This is achieved in the paper through an in-depth review of the two theories on organizational culture to illustrate how these concepts are reflected on the chosen case study of the Bain and Company. The two theories that I will focus on include the theory of organizational culture and the theory of organizational climate. This will then be applied in the context of Bain and Company to illustrate how leadership, management, power, and politics can influence organizational culture.
Leadership, Management, and their impact on organizational Culture.
The core principle mandate of every organization is how the leadership is set. Leadership skills and managerial mandates are very critical factors in the creation and reinforcement of the culture norms in every organization which in turn impacts organization effectiveness. Competent leaders ensure that individual employees within an organization adhere to the system of operation and accepts the changes prompted. Considering the four dimensional framework of a leadership styles; interaction between how leaders or managers facilitate their members, directing tasks and help in problem solving and implementation procedures, goal emphasis involving the reinforcements towards the excellence and feedback response from the product of all activities undertaken. These variables have significant importance and creates impact in the performance of the individual employees
Leadership also influences culture through the development of trust relationship with employees and interpersonal credibility. This culture is usually transmitted socially therefore has an influence the way an organization works. Leadership that possess credibility and influence significantly obtains positive impact on business output in every organization. To achieve these, it may involve strategic decision making by engaging all the relevant members in making policies and how to implement them, market driven integrations by predicting the product relevance and the economic need. These attributes affect the culture and may point out to some obstacles which may hinder an organization to achieve its goals and objectives. Therefore, culture is very important and its worth exploring how it function affects the outcome in an organization.
When the leadership structure is well defined in an organization they influence the interactions within a firm. The core leadership team should create a focus based on employees, customers and stakeholders’ relationship which then balance then concerns and task developments. This can also predict who can make the possible leaders on a similar organization. With this culture the organization can therefore easily integrate their functions effectively with efficient information flow both horizontally and vertically. These factors help in solving organizational conflicts and challenges because the problem can be easily identified depending on the level of effect is causes. To achieve these, leaders must possess good interpersonal skills and technical approach to shape the culture within the organization and this should be coupled with commitment and working hard to achieve the desired goals
Considering two prospective culture norms in an organization; constructive culture norms and defensive culture norms the way of approach defines the product of the outcome. Constructive culture is majorly affected by the behavior mechanisms within an organization to achieve order satisfaction. These therefore depends on tasks discharge, goal setting and achievements and supportive leadership which highly influences their productivity Defensive cultures however are affected by the level of quality related to strength, safety measures, forceful approach to tasks influences their functions.
