ABSTRACT
A mental illness or disorder is defined by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as “a syndrome characterized by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotion regulation, or behaviour that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning. This usually leads to some disability or distress in normal activities such as social or occupational ones. Mental illness is also defined as a disorder whose main characteristic is the poor regulation of thoughts, behaviour and moods. The main aim of the study will be to establish socio-economic and cultural factors affecting mentally ill patients attending Lusigetti Hospital Psychiatry Clinic, Kikuyu Sub County, Kiambu County. The study will be guided by the following specific objectives; to assess the socio-demographic factors affecting mentally ill patients; to determine the economic factors affecting mentally ill patients and to evaluate the cultural factors affecting mentally ill patients. The study will be conducted in Lusigetti Hospital, Psychiatry Clinic, Kikuyu Sub County, Kiambu County. The study will adopt a descriptive cross-sectional study design. The study will target patients with mental illness. Purposive sampling will be used to identify the study area and convenience sampling method to single out the respondents. The researcher will use interview schedule consisting of open and closed ended questions. Researcher administered interview schedule will be used where the researcher will ask the respondents questions while filling in the response. Data collected will be edited, coded and cleaned, categorized and tabulated as appropriate. Computer application Ms-Excel will be used to analyze and present the data respectively. Information generated will be presented in tables, charts and graphs
