Instructions:

HMB303 Global Health & Human Rights 2020 Final Term-Paper
For this paper, I would like you to discuss tensions (or a specific tension) that arise between
the aspirations of CEDAW, with its overt call to change “traditional roles” or “social and cultural
patterns” in societies, and the rights of individuals, groups or states to specific freedoms (i.e. human
rights) and/or sovereignty. Your discussion should have some bearing or focus on how these
tensions affect the health of women. Your paper should outline your position on the resolution of the tensions you describe.

Abstract
The purpose of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was to address women’s rights by compelling countries to abolish acts of discrimination against women and promote women’s rights. Most countries that have ratified the convention have expressed reservations to continue cultural and religious practices. Countries, especially in the Middle East and Africa, have sought exemptions from some articles of the CEDAW to promote their cultures and religious beliefs which tend to denigrate women rights. However, in other countries, the ratification is lagging as it is considered an intrusion into self-governance structures capable of making private citizens subjects of international treaties. All these tensions expose women to sex discrimination, limiting their access to quality health services. The tensions should be addressed through local advocacy initiatives targeting women’s rights. These initiatives must identify the facets of culture, religions and political ideology and help local leaders promote women’s freedom in their jurisdictions.
